Studio

A work often begins with a small clay model shaped by hand. The model is altered repeatedly to see how the form speaks with the light. The material is then chosen: marble, travertine, granite, walnut or, if it is to be cast, bronze.

In stone, the rough carving comes first, and the form is gradually drawn out of the block. Then the chisels become finer, and the surface is closed with files and sandpaper. Bronze works are cast by the lost-wax method; patina and polishing are completed in the studio.

Depending on the scale of the work, this process can take from a few weeks to a year.
