Sculptor — Fethiye, Türkiye
Umut Çetiz
Statement
Each material has its own resistance. Marble does not allow haste, wood imposes the direction of its grain, and bronze carries every decision I make in the clay model for years. My work is to speak with this resistance.
I work in Fethiye, between the sea and the mountain. The lines of the shore, the worn surfaces of the rocks, the shapes trees take in the wind — all find their way into the studio. The more I simplify the form, the more I believe what remains says.

The mark
Uç — the point
The initials Umut Çetiz form a Turkish word: uç — the point of the chisel, the first place where the tool meets the stone and a form begins.
The U is cut at an angle like a block shaped by the chisel; its curve thins as if carved. The cedilla of the Ç has broken away as a small chip — the piece that leaves the stone in every sculpture. The same chip forms the Ç in the name.
